I woke again with the sunrise, but after staying up so late the night before and with all the driving, I decided to take a day off. I’m not sure what that says about me that I want a day off from my vacation, but I just didn’t want to spend all day driving again.
So I headed back into Glacier, and went over the pass again. Since I had more light this time, I stopped at most of the pullouts to enjoy the scenery.
Near the pass, I drove into a cloud so thick that I could barely see the taillights of the car 30 feet ahead of me. There was a cool stop just above the clouds where I could see peaks of other mountains poking above the sea of gray. Looking back at my pictures, it seems that I failed to capture that view.
Logan Pass visitor’s center was open and I stepped in out of the rain to a packed building. It was a light rain that accompanied me as I walked along the paths close to the center.
I made my way down the pass to Raising Sun campground and called it a day. After a big early lunch, I took a lovely nap, then spent most of the day enjoying the view, the marmot that visited me a few times, and reading. Overall a wonderful day.
I just returned from a talk that a park ranger presented on bears and I think I have solidified my plans for the next few days. I’m going to stick to the more touristy parts of the park and not wander off into grizzly bear country by myself. I don’t think I’ll be able to see an actual glacier, but I’ve seen glaciers before, I can live with that. I paid for two nights here so tomorrow I’ll head to the Many Glaciers area and look around.
The ranger was telling us that just today, they had to ask everyone staying in tents to leave since a grizzly had gotten into some food and was exploring the area. I don’t relish the idea of not being on top of the food chain. There is also Two Medicine area to the south to explore.
The day after tomorrow, I’ll start making my way back home. I skipped the Grand Teton National Park on the way out and intend to visit there. I’ll decide after that what to do.
More text than pictures today, but it felt good to relax. It’s raining right now and there is a chance of storms tonight, but I have my bed made up in my car and plenty of books on my kindle.
